What kind of freshwater aquarium filter should I get?

I replied as follows:-

That’s an excellent question because without a doubt, filtration is the most important part of your aquarium. Your current aquarium is probably a biorb tank; they are the ones that come pre-fitted and will not take up much time in the way of maintenance. I must warn you though, that a regular freshwater aquarium will be much more taxing – fun, but you have to devote more time to it.

A freshwater aquarium filter is the cleaning mechanism of your tank. If you don’t have a filtration system, your fish will not live. A tank is an extremely limited environment and if it does not get a continuous cleaning, it will get contaminated pretty fast. A filter does the cleaning continuously while you only come in once every week or every fortnight to give the tank a wash and a change of water.

There are 3 kinds of cleaning that take place:

Chemical:This will remove dissolved wastes from your water. These wastes will be in molecular form, and this kind of cleaning uses either carbon or protein skimming processes to catch it. Without chemical filtration, there will be a lot of hazardous molecules floating around in your tank and the fish in it will eventually be poisoned and either get ill or die.

Mechanical:This kind of filtration will remove floating debris from the water. A freshwater mechanical filter will catch fish food that wasn’t eaten, fish poop that didn’t dissolve, plant sheddings and any other bits and pieces that would otherwise just float around.

Biological:This is by far the most important step in filtration, but that’s not to say that a freshwater tank can survive without the top 2 – not for long anyway. It breaks down ammonia compounds that would otherwise poison your fish. Nature provides for this kind of filtration by distributing the necessary bacteria for breakdown where ammonia is present, and all that this kind of filtration requires is a sponge for the bacteria to attach. These are sold at the pet shop. You must never completely clean out the sponge because you will eliminate all the bacteria and then you have to give it time to re-attach before you can re-introduce your fish.

Fortunately, many freshwater aquarium filters in the market come with all three filtration methods contained, so you don’t have to worry about getting each separately. I don’t know how big a tank you plan on getting, but if it’s not too big an under-gravel freshwater aquarium filter would be a nice place to begin. You will get to see filtration at its plainest, and they are also not very demanding – all you have to do is vacuum. An Amazon aquarium:  The centrepiece of an aquarium for South American cichlids is a large root or stump from a peat bog.  This naturally acidic wood is perfect for recreating the biotope of angelfish, as well as that of many small characins such as neon tetras or penguin tetras.  It is advised to boil the root before placing it in your tank to eliminate any parasites and to reduce the chance of it colouring your tanks water.  Place this root in the centre of your tank with smaller roots surrounding it, leaving a nice beach area free at the front once the plants have been added.  The back of the aquarium should be covered with long stemmed plants such as sagittaria or vallisneria, with some large echinodorus on either side of the main root.  Medium-sized Echinodorus parviflorus can colonise the middle area of the tank while dwarf species such as Echinodorus tenellus carpet the floor with greenery at the front.  For a splash of red in the background you could also add Alternanthera reineckii along beside the sagittaria or vallisneria.  A few pieces of slate piled flat on the ground can create terraces which will not only look good but will also act as shelter for your fish when they feel the need to hide.

An Indian Aquarium:  Once again, wood is an important part of the decor, in the form of mangrove roots and fossilised wood.  The substrate should be a very fine gravel.  Planting can be very dense here as Gouramis love the shade.  The plants will also supply them with plenty hiding places and allow the males to define their own territory.  Hygrophila polysperma, Limnophila aquatica and Limnophila indica are ideal for your background as their vigorous growth will quickly hide the rear glass and any equipment attached to it.  Cryptocoryne becketti and Cryptocoryne wendtii along with Aponogeten crispus are an excellent choice for the middle of the tank while Cryptocoryne parva sits perfectly in the foreground.

I have a large fish tank (65??) w/ supplies can i put wild fish from my pond into it? ?

I was going to put some perch, rock bass, and gills all about 4-5 inches. if this is a bad idea tell me how I should fix it. I do not want to kill the fish by stunting them, it seems cruel. Am i going to stunt them? I would like to put about 20 fish in the tank, or is that too many

65 gallons ? Yes you can put 1 perch or bass in there and maybe like 5 blue gills if you want as they stay smaller. The main thing about tanks is you need to make sure the size of the fish is not to big for the tank. Like if you have a 12 inch fish, and your tank is only 12 inch wide, then you can’t keep him in that tank cus he will have a hard time turning around. You can keep the bass and perch in there but once they grow a few inches short of the width you need to put them back in the pond. The move will be stressful as well so I wouldn’t recommend it. Not to mention the fact that in tanks you have to buy test kits and Monitor the water VERY closely makes it hard to do with wild fish. Also look out for territorial issues that may arise from lack of space as well. Good Luck

If you want your aquarium to be a success, you must perform routine maintenance. Fish, like any other living creatures, produce waste both through respiration and excrement. Since an aquarium is such a limited environment, this waste has nowhere to go. You must get it out yourself on a regular basis.

Freshwater aquarium maintenance needs to be done usually every day, and then every 2 weeks or every month. Every few years, you’ll need some major overhauls. Depending on the type of fish tank you get though, you may not need to clean it so often.

Some tanks, like biorb fish tanks, require 5 minute maintenance every month, but you still have to check on it every day. You mainly check just to see how the fish are behaving – if you notice reduced activity, it could be a warning that toxins are accumulating and you need to get cleaning.

Let’s look at what you need to do for each of the routines:

1. Daily fresh water aquarium maintenance:

You need to do the following every day:

• Check your fish for signs of disease or illness. We already mentioned that decreased activity is the first sign.

• Check if there is any fish that’s getting picked on – it will be rather quiet and hidden away.

• Check the swimming pattern – frantic or lethargic swimming could be a sign that something is out of order.

• Check if they have eaten their food – lots of leftovers could be a sign that the water is toxic and is contaminating the food.

• Check the lights to make sure they’re working and the filters too. Have a look at your aquarium thermometer to make sure the temperature is right.

• Lastly, feed the fish.

If any fish is not behaving normally, it should be taken out of the tank and put in another tank by itself – it could be contagious.

2. Weekly and Bi-weekly freshwater aquarium maintenance

Every week or couple of weeks depending on the kind of tank you have, do the following after taking out your fish:

• Change the water in your tank. You can change just a quarter to a third of it. The frequency of water change depends on the kind of fish that you keep – some require more cleaning after.

• Suction your substrate – there’s lots of food particles that are caught in substrate. There are substrate cleaning devices available in your pet store. If you can’t get one, put the substrate in a bucket and run water over it.

• Use an aquarium scrubber to scrub the inside of the aquarium and the lid. Also give the outside a good wipe.

• Rinse out filters as the instruction manual says and make sure that you take out all dirt.

• If your aquarium plants have overgrown, trim them.

• Check pH levels using your pH test kit.

• Check your supplies to make sure that they can last you till the next time you plan to re-stock.

3. 3 to 4 year freshwater aquarium maintenance

As you can imagine, this one is major. It will need you to replace a few things and it will take a few hours to do it:

• Get a 2nd temporary tank and put a third of the water and the fish in it.

• Clean the inside of the aquarium using brine (salt and water).

• If you can afford it, replace the substrate. If you can’t, wash the substrate that you have with brine.

• Before you put everything back in, check your aquarium for any damage or wear and tear that may have occurred over the years. If the seams look like they are giving way, use some sealant and make sure it’s completely dry.

• Using your pH test kit, test the salinity of the water you put your fish in.

• Arrange your substrate and plants back in tank and then put the fish back in.

There are some Do Nots when it comes to freshwater aquarium maintenance:

• Never use soap or detergents of any kind on your fish tank or any of its accessories. It will harm your fish. If you need to scrub anything, use salt – it’s a good and harmless abrasive.

• If you have an acrylic tank, watch out not to scratch it during cleaning. These kinds of tanks come with their own special cleaning materials.

• Always let your heater cool down before you pull it out of the water.

• Unless your tank is pre-conditioned, never fill it with totally fresh water – it will take time to go through the entire process that supplies the special environment for the fish tank during which period your fish can die. Keep a bit of the old and mix it in with the fresh. If it’s too dirty, go to the pet store and get some already conditioned water.

• Sponge filters do OK if you rinse with just water.

Are Crowntail,Veil Tail or Half-moon Betta fish suitable for Biorb tanks?

no. biorb tanks are death traps for any fish, especially bettas. they have very small surface area at the top due to the circular shape and fish need oxygen. not enough can get into the air due to how small the surface is and bettas actually come up the surface and breath air.
alot of ppl get biorbs because they do look really cool, but no fish can live a healthy normal life span in one. the shape is just not good for fish to be in.
i would suggest a five gallon tank with aeration and a filter at least. please dont cram your betta into a tee-tiny bowl. these just arent healthy.
